Coastal Living Idea House Manager
REPORTS TO: Executive Director
JOB SUMMARY:
Oversees management of the Coastal Living Idea House including volunteer management, oversight for house cleaning services, and responsibility for coordination of events and guests for the duration of the open house.
JOB DUTIES:
- Duties include but may not be limited to:
- Supervise volunteer or hourly personnel in all aspects of the Idea House, including training of each guide.
- Coordinate schedule for volunteers or staff and notify GHF of schedules on a weekly basis.
- Recruit volunteers as needed to serve as guides in the Idea House.
- Along with GHF staff, provide an accurate, informative, educational and entertaining guide of the Idea House based on the training offered by the Coastal Living and Beachtown staff.
- Encourage visitor attendance at other GHF and Galveston sites and events.
- Manage media center presentations and stock of literature in Media Room.
- Oversee sales of tickets and management of daily deposits.
- Answer telephone or mail inquiries. Manage mailing requests for information.
- Responsible for opening and closing the Idea House during tour days, Thursday Monday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon until 5 p.m.
- Report visitation numbers to Coastal Living and Beachtown representatives.
- Attend and coordinate training sessions with Coastal Living and Beachtown representatives.
- Ensure security and safety in and around the Idea House.
- Schedule and oversee housekeeping services. Coordinate with Beachtown representatives on the maintenance of grounds.
- It is the sole discretion of Beachtown representatives to decide to continue the tours into February 2009.
EDUCATION: High school graduate required, college education preferred.
SKILLS:
Friendly, outgoing personality combined with an ability to maintain grace and composure in stressful situations. Must be self-motivated. Ability to learn and communicate information about Galveston and its attractions in a clear concise manner. Able to communicate effectively with staff and volunteers. Must have reliable transportation and ability to work scheduled hours on a regular basis. Requires negotiation of stairs to second and third floors. Must be able to life 20 pounds. Must be accessible by cell phone for emergencies.
EXPERIENCE: Two years related experience in retail, museum or tourist services.
SALARY: $10-12 per hour, depending on qualifications.

Project Coordinator II
Reports to: Director of Preservation Services
Summary: Responsible for the development and daily management of expanded field service programs of the Preservation Services Department, including program scope and physical coverage area. This pilot program will focus on increased recovery and sustainability of historic resources on Galveston Island, and will serve as a model for other coastal communities. This position will require an organized, inventive and self-motivated professional to maximize the services provided to the community and impress potential new members and donors to the Foundation.
Job Duties:
- Coordinating energy audits and laser documentation of historic structures with outside consultants for individual properties; completion of all reports as necessary for the property owner and the auditors.
- Providing training on sustainable materials and green architectural practices as they apply to historic buildings.
- Developing a program including guidelines and a formal competition to create appropriate emergency houses for Galveston Island following a disaster. The houses will be respectful of the vernacular buildings of the Island as well as the interest in green building.
- Expanding the existing Windstorm Exemption Program to cover Galveston County and increasing awareness of the program across Galveston Island for underserved neighborhoods.
- Educating property owners on lead-based paint safety, energy efficiency and structural reinforcement of historic buildings.
- Increasing efforts to retrieve recyclable building materials for the Architectural Salvage Warehouse and developing liaisons with local entities to secure salvaged architectural materials.
- Reporting to the regional and national offices of the National Trust for Historic Preservation on the development, progress and performance (including financial management) of the Partners in the Field grant.
- Writing and assisting with grant applications, press releases, bid documents and research associated with the Partners in the Field Grant.
- Performing additional duties as assigned by the department head or Executive Director and working flexible hours as necessary to provide services.
Education:
- Undergraduate or terminal professional degree in architecture, construction, historic preservation or similar design/building field. Graduate degree in a related field and/or graduate coursework in historic preservation preferred. Knowledge of green architectural practices.
Skills:
- Ability to interact one-on-one and in groups with diverse clients and general public and communicate clearly in oral and written formats. Strong organizational, computer (Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint, as well as photography, other means of producing reports and presentations) and writing skills, working knowledge of historic preservation, rehabilitation and construction techniques and materials, architectural history. This position may involve moderate to heavy lifting (25 lbs. or greater), advanced mobility on project worksites, as well as working outdoors on a regular basis. Post-emergency assessment, recovery and assistance will be one requirement of this position. Must be able to balance many tasks at once and shift priorities to accommodate change.
Experience:
- Experience in rehabilitation of historic buildings, in community development, urban planning, or historic preservation field. Experience developing bid documents, project budget management and with construction administration. Previous public speaking, lecturing and interaction with public commissions and boards preferred.
Program:
- A three-year commitment will be required for this position which is made possible through a Partners in the Field grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This is a pilot program and will be a model for other organizations. While it is the intent of the Galveston Historical Foundation to continue this position at the end of three years, we cannot guarantee that at this time.

Texas Seaport Museum
1877 ELISSA
Galveston, Texas
Galveston Historical Foundation preserves and revitalizes the architectural, cultural and maritime heritage of Galveston Island.
ELISSA is a three-masted, iron-hulled sailing ship built in 1877 in Aberdeen, Scotland by Alexander Hall & Company. She carries nineteen sails covering over one-quarter of an acre in surface area. In 2005, the Texas Legislature named ELISSA the “tall ship of Texas” recognizing her contribution to Galveston and the state. ELISSA is the centerpiece of the Texas Seaport Museum that includes a visitor center, retail operation, and museum exhibits. Other maritime vessels are part of the operations and interpretation of Galveston’s historical and natural setting.
ELISSA is maintained by a volunteer crew and is almost unique among tall ships in the United States in that she is sailed annually by volunteers and trained officers. The Texas Seaport Museum hosts more than 50,000 visitors each year. The museum also provides a venue for important community and private events throughout the year.
The operations of the Texas Seaport Museum are overseen by a full-time staff of six including the director and several part-time assistants. A volunteer committee assists in setting policies and establishes priorities and makes recommendations to the Board of Directors of Galveston Historical Foundation. GHF is one of the oldest and largest non-profit historic preservation organizations in the United States with an established record of success and commitment to the preservation of historic land and maritime resources. JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Director, Texas Seaport Museum
REPORTS TO: Galveston Historical Foundation Executive Director
JOB SUMMARY: The Director oversees the preservation, conservation, interpretation and program development of the 1877 sailing vessel ELISSA, the tour vessel SEAGULL II, the 1937 shrimp boat SANTA MARIA, several small boats, and the collection of the Texas Seaport Museum. Manages the site as a museum, visitor attraction, and maritime preservation project.
JOB DUTIES:
- Manages the daily operation of TSM as a historical public attraction.
- Manages museum staff activities, including but not limited to:
- a. Hiring, training, scheduling, supervising and evaluating paid and volunteer staff.
- b. Coordinating staff enrichment.
- Supervises and directs ship and site maintenance procedures, planning, scheduling and budgeting for major maintenance items as well as long range restoration, maintenance planning, and sailing operations.
- Works with GHF Executive Director and TSM volunteer committee to prepare annual goals and budget for review with the approval of GHF Executive Director and Board of Directors.
- Supervises and directs ship and museum programming, adult education (including sail training), children’s education programs, volunteer programming, exhibit development, collection management and acquisition, and event planning.
- Assists other GHF staff with the marketing and public relations for all aspects of the TSM/ELISSA and events associated with the operations of TSM/ELISSA.
- With the GHF Executive Director, plans, develops and implements new museum programming as well as participates in the execution of existing programming, including cooperative programs with other GHF departments, community organizations, and other entities.
- Oversees educational programming that may include instruction and development of relationships with area academic institutions or maritime educational centers in the US.
- Participates in all development and fundraising programs initiated on behalf of TSM/ELISSA and Galveston Historical Foundation, as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned by GHF Executive Director.
EDUCATION: College degree in a museum studies, history, maritime studies, or a related field. An advanced degree is preferred in a field that is related to the operations or programs of TSM.
KNOWLEDGE: Working knowledge of US Coast Guard regulations and requirements as applied to the vessels owned or operated by GHF.
SKILLS: Strong organization skills, personnel management, budget, and finance. Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing with staff, volunteers, and the public.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum 3-5 years supervisory or management experience of staff and volunteers, preferably in museum or maritime environment. Program development, budgetary oversight, and public presentation experience helpful. Previous employment or volunteer experience with sailing vessels preferred.
