1877 Tall Ship ELISSA: Donate

Help Keep ELISSA Sailing

Donate to the ELISSA drydock effort today

Hauling out ELISSA at a shipyard for periodic inspection, repair and painting is a major operation, but necessary to keep her sailing.

ELISSA depends on her friends for her very being. She was saved because people cared. She became the standard by which future ship restorations are judged. And, through prudent stewardship, she will continue to live and to sail. The United States Coast Guard requires ELISSA to undergo a dry-docking twice every five years. Without the dry-docking, ELISSA would not be allowed to sail, her educational programs would diminish, and her condition would deteriorate.

The vessel was dry-docked in January 2003, at a cost of $60,000, in January of 2006 at a cost of $80,000, and is scheduled to be lifted out again in January of 2008. This upcoming dry-docking is estimated to cost over $100,00, an increase that reflects ever-stricter Coast Guard safety requirements, the diminishing number of shipyards capable of doing the work, and the complications of piping replacements to be undertaken this time.

With your support of ELISSA’s dry-docking, she can continue to sail and represent, as no other historic resource can, the distinct heritage of Galveston Island and the importance of the maritime component of Texas history.

Other ways to help ELISSA and the Texas Seaport Museum:

  • $20,000 will allow us to replace the foredeck
  • $15,000 provides funds for restoration of the 1877 skylight and companionway
  • $10,000 pays our insurance bill for one month
  • $2,500 pays our electricity bill for one month
  • $1,000 provides funds for our small-boat program
  • $500 will buy 250 feet of 1/2-inch Spunflex line for running rigging
  • $100 provides funds for 5 good quality paint brushes
  • $50 pays for a one-month supply of sandpaper
  • $10 will buy one chipping hammer (for “rust-busting”)

ELISSA's Plankowners Syndicate

The annual Plankowners Party is a jovial get-together of ELISSA supporters.

We invite you to join the growing number of ELISSA Plateowners (formerly known as “Plankowners,” until all the wooden deck planks were spoken for). These members have shown their support for the Texas Seaport Museum through their contributions. Your support is vital to the preservation and interpretation of Texas’ seafaring heritage.

An honorary ownership of an ELISSA hull plate is $375. It comes with our great thanks for your support, a lifetime pass to the Texas Seaport Museum and ELISSA, a commemorative rivet plaque, and a certificate of “ownership.” An inscription in your honor (or to whomever you wish to honor) or to your company will be placed on a permanent plaque displayed at the Texas Seaport Museum.

Plateowners are also invited to join in social and fundraising events for the museum and ELISSA. The main event of the year is a June party held at Pier 22. It’s always great fun with a silent and live auction, live entertainment, and best of all, a chance to share your enthusiasm with others who have made the same commitment as yourself.
