How Your Gift Helps Us Preserve Historic Galveston

Here's How Your Gift Helps Us Preserve Historic Galveston

Galveston Historical Foundation reaches beyond the historic island to the many supporters of our programs and sites. GHF employees and volunteers work daily to preserve the history, architecture and maritime traditions of Galveston. As we take each step we know that our efforts also preserve the heritage of thousands of Texans and Americans who have a connection with our island since its humble beginnings in the 1830s.

Donations to the Foundation go toward operating expenses, program offerings and maintenance and repair of the fifteen properties, sites, objects and vessels that we own or manage. These historic properties collectively tell various aspects of Galveston's history and make the island a colorful place to live and visit.

From time to time, GHF initiates special requests to support our work. Annually we issue a challenge that matches a generous gift of George Mitchell, the Wortham Foundation and other friends of the organization. Every three years GHF requests support to dry dock our historic sailing vessel, ELISSA. This 1877 iron barque preserves a rare tradition of Texas maritime life. In order to keep it as one of the few sailing tall ships in America, we must continue to restore and maintain it.

You may donate at this site to support a particular interest or as part of our ongoing operational needs. Every gift is meaningful to us and allows us to continue to give children and adults a chance to touch this extraordinary history we hold on Galveston Island.

Best wishes.
