New Traditions Art Quilt Exhibit To Debut At GHF's U.S. Custom House

New Traditions Art Quilt Exhibit To Debut At Galveston Historical Foundation’s U.S. Custom House

Galveston Historical Foundation announces the newest addition to its run of quilt exhibits with the “New Traditions – Art Quilts” installation. Running through July 1, in Galveston Historical Foundation’s U.S. Custom House, 502 20th Street, the exhibit highlights quilts used not only for their customary use, but also for their ability to serve as a canvas for art. The quilts can be viewed Monday – Friday from 9 am – 5 pm.

“Historically, quilts are made to be functional.” says guest curator Jenny Chiovaro. “However, when making functional coverings, the quilters often choose scraps carefully, placing them with an artistic eye to make things of beauty for their home.”

Today’s definition of an art quilt is as varied as the artists themselves. Some use paint and dye extensively, treating their quilt like a canvas while others collage with fibers and fabric, producing many layers. Some incorporate “found” objects, raw edges, hand-stamped fabric, beads, metal, and other materials not seen in more traditional work. With today’s computers, many print digital images directly onto fabric. Some use traditional blocks and patterns, but enliven them with modern fabric and color.
