GHF Extends Deadline for Preservation Resource Center Historic Preservation Awards Applications to April 15

Galveston Historical Foundation’s (GHF)’s Preservation Resource Center (PRC) has extended the deadline for taking nominations for their 2008/2009 Historic Preservation Awards. The PRC sponsors the Galveston Historic Preservation Awards each year to recognize projects, craftspeople, and individuals that help to improve the historic architectural stock of Galveston Island.

Applications are available at www.galvestonhistory.org or at the Architectural Salvage Warehouse at 908 23rd Street and GHF Headquarters at 502 20th Street. The original due date for applications was April 10, 2009. GHF has now extended the deadline to April 15.

GHF has revamped the awards for this year. There are a number of categories kept from years past and three new ones. GHF is continuing the following award categories from years past:

  • Restoration
  • Rehabilitation
  • Adaptive use of a historic building
  • New Construction/Infill that enhances the existing historic fabric
  • Recognition of the craftspeople who maintain, build, and restore our important buildings
  • Community service award for preservation or heritage-related programs or activities.

New award categories this year include the Galveston GREEN Award for companies or individuals that integrate sustainable materials and technology in retrofitting historic properties; and the Post-IKE Recovery award for individuals/companies that have made significant progress in rehabilitating their respective properties. Also new this year is the Sally Wallace Preservation Advocate Award honoring the memory of a pivotal historic preservation pioneer in the Galveston community. Award guidelines and full explanations of each award category can be found on the application.

All nominations will be reviewed and judged by a panel of independent preservation professionals from outside the Galveston Community. The 2008/2009 Historic Preservation Awards will be presented at a special event held during GHF’s Historic Homes Tour on the evening of May 8.
