“Mardi Gras Rembemembered,” an Exhibit of Costumes, Photographs and Accessories, will be on Display at Galveston County Historical Museum through February 28

Galveston County Historical Museum recently opened a new exhibit in its second-floor gallery entitled “Mardi Gras Remembered.” All the artifacts on exhibit are from the museum’s collection. Fourteen trains ranging in dates from the 1930s through the 1980s are on exhibit, along with photographs and accessories such as sceptors, crowns, and sashes. The exhibit will run throughout the month of February.

“The artifacts from the 1940s are some of the most unique, “said museum Director Jodi Wright-Gidley. “A beautifully beaded dress worn by Libbie Moody Thompson for an Austrian-themed Mardi Gras is exhibited, as are a Dutch-themed train and boat pulled during parades.” One of the oldest costumes in the museum collection is a children’s jester costume worn during Mardi Gras in the 1890s. “We would appreciate additional donations relating to past Galveston Mardi Gras,” adds the director.

Galveston County Historical Museum is a joint project of Galveston County Commissioners Court and Galveston Historical Foundation. It is located in the historic 1921 City National Bank Building located at 2219 Market Street in downtown Galveston. Museum admission is free. Call 409-766-2340 for more information.
