Galveston Historical Foundation to Offer Green Training Programs in July and August, 2010
Galveston Historical Foundation is organizing training programs on sustainable materials and building techniques during July and August, 2010. All class sessions are free and open to the public and will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the second-floor courtroom of GHF Headquarters at the 1861 U.S. Custom House. They will be geared towards homeowners and contractors working on historic home renovations as well as builders of new construction, but anyone interested is invited to attend. July 1 Geothermal Energy in Galveston and the Greater Houston Area
LoopTech International (Russell Buras)
Russell Buras will provide a demonstration of Geothermal energy transfer and detail how different types of systems work. A comprehensive overview of closed loop systems and how they benefit the Greater Houston and Galveston Area will also be included. Additionally, Buras will outline the pros and cons of Geothermal / GeoExchange and how to determine potential economic benefits. Lunch provided.
July 8 The New Professional Wash System for Paint
Glidden Paint (Dale Reedy)
Dale Reedy will detail the new Professional Wash System designed by Glidden Paint to help owners and contractors achieve waste management of paint washings. The unit converts waterborne paint washings into clear water and solid waste allowing for easy control and disposal. Lunch provided.
July 15 - Small Duct High Velocity HVAC Systems
Unico System, Inc. (Travis Dodson)
Travis Dodson will discuss small-duct, high-velocity systems and how Unico works to address related problems. Special attention will be given to how Unico’s installation differs from that of standard systems. Lunch and AIA CEUs provided.
July 22 The Latest and Greatest Lighting Technologies

Leslie Thompson will provide an explanation of the most recent developments in lighting technologies including LED testing and reports. She will also help identify potential cost-saving measures, including rebate opportunities and incentives and lighting retrofits for businesses.
July 29 Energy-Efficient Roofing Options
Precision Roof Crafters (Tim McCall)
Tim McCall will detail the various ways to revamp a roofing system to limit heat absorption. Topics include reflective roofing, cool colors, and radiant barriers. Precision Roof Crafters installed the new standing-seam metal roof at GHF’s LEED for Homes project, the Green Revival house at 3101 Ave. Q.
August 5 Clean, Durable and Recycled Tile Products
Daltile (Jim Hodges)
Jim Hodges will discuss Greenworks, a program of Daltile that offers tile products using minimal amounts of energy and resources. This is being done in a variety of ways such as utilizing byproducts that other companies had previously discarded, reusing manufacturing waste, and recycling as many solid materials as possible that cannot be reused internally.
August 12 - Understanding Mold in the Restoration Industry
Servpro (Tom Norlander)
Tom Norlander will discuss the effects of mold on the indoor environment when a home or business has suffered water damage.
August 19 Structural Connectors
Simpson Strong-Tie (Mark Stripling)
Learn about the continuous load path requirements of the building code, how the system works to keep the house safe and secure and the way connectors provide a structural system. Additional topics will include the proper installation of popular connectors for high wind regions. A team of technical representatives from Simpson Strong-Tie will be on hand to both teach and answer questions.
