Galveston Historical Foundation’s Fall 2010 Demonstration Class Series begins October 2, with “Protecting Your House from Termites,” a topic that has gained new relevance with the proliferation in Galveston of the highly damaging Formosan termites in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike. Stacey Cole, of Truly Nolen Pest Control, will lead the first Saturday morning class, discussing steps property owners can take to protect their buildings from the newly aggressive Formosans as well as the more familiar and controllable dry-rot and subterranean termites.

Presentations will take place on Saturday mornings at 9 a.m., and will usually last two hours. Classes can be paid for upon arrival, but to guarantee a seat pre-registration is required. Admission to the entire series is $45 for GHF members and $55 for non-members; Admission to individual classes is $10 for GHF members and $12 for non-members. All classes except one will be held at the GHF Architectural Salvage Warehouse at the Sealy Garage, second floor, 908 23rd Street. The November 13 class will be held in the Preservation Resource Center at GHF Headquarters, the 1861 Custom House, 502 20th Street. Galveston Historical Foundation will host the class “Protecting Your House from Termites,” on Saturday, October 2, at 9 a.m. in the second-floor classroom at GHF’s Architectural Salvage Warehouse. October 16: Exploring Historic Wall Coverings

Part of Galveston Historical Foundation’s Fall 2010 Demonstration Class Series

Galveston Historical Foundation will host the class “Exploring Historic Wall Coverings” on Saturday, October 16 starting at 9 a.m. in the second-floor classroom at GHF’s Architectural Salvage Warehouse. Ethan Bradshaw of WallEx in Houston will discuss how wall coverings have changed in style and substance through history as well as how application methods have evolved. Bradshaw also will introduce class members to wall coverings available today that either reproduce or reinterpret historic designs and will explain the latest application techniques. October 23: Restoring and Repairing Stained Glass

Part of Galveston Historical Foundation’s Fall 2010 Demonstration Class Series

Galveston Historical Foundation will host the class “Restoring and Repairing Stained Glass” on Saturday, October 23, starting at 9 a.m. in the second-floor classroom at GHF’s Architectural Salvage Warehouse. Stained glass adorns many historic buildings throughout Galveston, from churches to private residences. Constant exposure to the elements, harsh Texas sunlight, and unforeseen accidents can damage stained glass through the years. Stained-glass artisan Karen Farrell will show class participants the various ways to maintain and repair decorative stained glass. November 13: Researching Your Historic Property in GHF’s Preservation Resource Center

Part of Galveston Historical Foundation’s Fall 2010 Demonstration Class Series

Galveston Historical Foundation will host the class “Researching Your Historic Property” on Saturday, November 13, at 9 a.m. Special Note: This class will be held in the library of the Preservation Resource Center at GHF’s headquarters, the 1861 Custom House, 502 20th Street. For those who want to unravel the mysteries lurking in their historic home, the class will unveil Galveston’s many archival resources for researchers. Matt Farragher, of GHF’s Preservation Resource Center, will teach participants how and where to search for historic images, maps, photographs and the names of past residents. November 20: Repairing and Restoring Your Historic Doors

Part of Galveston Historical Foundation’s Fall 2010 Demonstration Class Series

Galveston Historical Foundation will host the class “Repairing and Restoring Your Historic Doors” on Saturday, November 20 at 9 a.m. in the second-floor classroom at GHF’s Architectural Salvage Warehouse. Many of Galveston’s old buildings have distinctive historic doors made with craftsmanship and materials that are nearly impossible to duplicate today. Some elbow grease, the right tools, and a bit of historic know-how can bring these beauties back from the brink of being lost. Class leader and restoration craftsman Michael Morris, of Classic Morris, has spent years fine-tuning his craft of returning historic doors to their former luster.
