Don’t Just Come to Dickens:
Be a Part of It!
If you have been to Dickens on The Strand and watched costumed lords and ladies, lads and lassies, sell tickets, pour beer, and make merry, you may have wondered, who all these folks are, and how can you be part of the festivities?
It is easy! GALVESTON HISTORICAL FOUNDATION begins recruiting volunteers and volunteer chairmen months before the festival. In fact, the work begins in earnest during the summer and continues right up until Dickens weekend. It takes in excess of 700 volunteers each year to ensure the success of the event. Each volunteer has a special reason for being a part of the action. It may be to get in the holiday spirit, support GHF’s mission to preserve Galveston’s heritage and historic buildings, meet new friends, or simply have a good time. When asked about her Dickens experience, long time Dickens volunteer Gay Fly states, “We feel that Dickens is so much a part of the spirit of the season. This event is something we look forward to every year. We know that GHF needs dedicated volunteers to put on a festival this large. I would encourage everyone to take an active part in it.”
Volunteer opportunities at the event include ticket taking, ticket selling, information booths, volunteer hosts, festival pubs, festival set-up, stage management and special projects. You can volunteer to work a two-hour shift or be a chairperson. Your level of support is up to you!
So why wait to be a part of it all? Call Eve Monteith, Event Coordinator, Galveston Historical Foundation at 409-765-7834, ext. 31. See you at Dickens on The Strand!
