Covenant Monitoring

GHF holds protective covenants on approximately 35 commercial structures, 40 residences, and one oak tree in Galveston. Contrary to popular local belief, GHF only has the right to review and control the changes to the exterior of these properties, and not all buildings inside historic districts.

Historic districts are overseen by the City of Galveston's Landmark Commission, and approval must be received from the commission before exterior modifications to buildings in these districts can be made.

The only historic district with a limited paint pallet is the Strand-Mechanic National Register Historic Landmark District, and colors are controlled by the City of Galveston's Landmark Commission. If a property has GHF covenants and is within a historic district, exterior alterations must be approved by both GHF and the Landmark Commission before work can begin. Monitoring these buildings helps insure that the historic character of the building and neighborhood is maintained
