Hotels Rooms Are Available For Dickens On The Strand This Weekend
"Yes, Virginia" - Galveston Island and points north have available rooms for the return of Dickens on the Strand, one of Texas' most popular holiday attractions.
Dickens on the Strand returns to Galveston Island on December 6th and 7th, with special events on Friday, December 5th. more

Galveston's Famous Victorian Festival Still has Room at its Handbell Concerts, English Country Breakfasts, Christmas by Candlelight Menard House Tour, and Bishop's Palace Holiday Tours

Galveston's Dickens on The Strand Holiday Festival Will Go on in 2008
Even in the Face of Downtown Devastation Wreaked by Hurricane Ike
Galveston Historical Foundation Executive Director Dwayne Jones today announced that the organization's most important annual fundraising event, the 35-year-old Dickens on The Strand Victorian holiday festival, will take place this year, even in the face of extensive flood damage by Hurricane Ike to the historic downtown where the festival is held. more



GHF Receives Disaster Relief Grant from Meadows Foundation
The Meadows Foundation of Dallas, a long-time supporter of Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF), has announced a new $100,000 grant to help the organization stabilize its operations disrupted by Hurricane Ike.
"GHF is extremely grateful to the Meadows Foundation for this generous gift at a critical time in our history," said Dwayne Jones, executive director of GHF. "This gift reflects the Meadows Foundation's ability to respond to emergencies with compassion and vision. With the Meadows Foundation's help, GHF will be able to continue its operations to assist property owners and businesses as we rebuild the historic island." more



GHF Revolving Fund Offers Historic 1860 House (No Ike Damage) for Sale
This center-hall cottage was constructed around 1860 at the corner of 16th Street and Avenue K in Galveston. Shortly after 1900, the house was moved to the adjoining lot and an out building was attached to create a T-shaped back gallery. Preservation Resource Center Establishes Recovery Wish List on Amazon.com
Matt Farragher, GHF staff at the foundation's Preservation Resource Center (PRC), has announced an easy way for interested Galvestonians to help rebuild the library and other supplies that were extensively damaged in the storm surge from Hurricane Ike. Gonzalez Challenges Fellow Contractors to Support Dickens on The Strand
A local contractor has thrown down the gauntlet, challenging fellow businesses to help Dickens on The Strand. The annual Victorian holiday festival is Galveston Island's signature holiday event, which returns for its 35th year on the weekend of Dec. 6 and 7. Alex Gonzalez is the owner of Creative Combinations, Inc., and a longtime supporter of Galveston Historical Foundation. more

On the Sunday following Ike's Saturday morning strike, GHF executive director Dwayne Jones called a meeting of staff evacuees in Austin. An expedition was organized to return to the island with suitable cleaning and safety equipment (including mold safety information sheets and hurredly designed "GHF Disaster Response Team" t-shirts). The team arrived on the island on Thursday morning, ready to assess the damage to GHF properties, to begin remediation, and to distribute information packets to returning residents. Galveston's December Dickens on The Strand Festival to Raise Money for Post-Ike Recovery If you'd like to help the island recover from Hurricane Ike, just mark your calendar. The weekend of Dec. 6 and 7, the 35th annual Dickens on The Strand Victorian holiday festival will be the first major event to be held in Galveston's historic downtown in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike. Galveston has one of the largest collections of restored 19th-century iron-front commercial buildings in the country. The downtown Strand National Historic Landmark District and the residential East End Historic Landmark District comprise the largest federally recognized historic landmark district area in the state of Texas. Galveston Attractions Reopening
Two of the island's most popular tourist attractions will reopen for public tours Saturday, Oct. 25, for the first time since Hurricane Ike. The Bishop's Palace, on Broadway at 14th Street, will be open from noon to 4 p.m., with guided tours on the hour. The 1877 tall ship Elissa, moored at Pier 22 just off Harborside Drive, will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Designated as a National Historic Landmark, the Bishop's Palace has been listed as one of the nation's most important Victorian buildings... more

My visit to Galveston last week was bittersweet; on one hand, I was saddened by the enormous amount of damage Hurricane Ike inflicted on the city's historic areas. But at the same time, I also saw firsthand the courageous response of Galvestonians to the storm and the impressive progress in debris cleanup and remediation of damage that has already taken place. Galveston Historical Foundation Offers Windstorm Exemption to all Galveston County
Galveston Historical Foundation wants to remind residents that they have extended the Windstorm Exemption Program (WEA-1) to all of Galveston County through a grant with the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Partners in the Field Program. The Texas Windstorm Exemption was made possible for all coastal counties by the Texas State Legislature in 1997. Since that time over 800 properties on Galveston Island have been listed.

Six Weeks after Hurricane Ike, Texas Seaport Museum Reopens
Visitors will be able to walk the decks of the restored 1877 tall ship Elissa this weekend for the first time since Hurricane Ike inundated the piers and buildings of the Texas Seaport Museum (TSM), the vessel's home base.
A new 42-foot gangway provides access across heavily damaged piers. Basic electrical service was reconnected on Friday. The newly painted and carpeted gift shop offers retail items that escaped damage. A mandatory inspection by U. S. Coast Guard officials pronounced the vessel ready for the public... more
