Galveston Historical Foundation’s First Annual Meeting Under New Executive Director Dwayne Jones to be an “Island Casual” Event at Garten Verein July 12

Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF)’s new executive director Dwayne Jones will lead the organization’s annual meeting on Thursday, July 12 at the Garten Verein Pavilion, 2704 Avenue O. The event begins at 5:30 with hors d’oeuvres and libations. Dress this year is “Island Casual.”

The main order of business is the election of officers, directors and advisors for 2007-2008, along with an overview of GHF’s accomplishments over the past fiscal year.

The annual meeting will include the “passing of the gavel” from outgoing board president Elizabeth ‘Bets’ Anderson to incoming president Raymond Lewis. Lewis, associate dean for admissions and student affairs with the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Allied Health Sciences, will be the first African American president of Galveston Historical Foundation. An active member of GHF for many years, Lewis, this past fiscal year, successfully spearheaded negotiations that led to the long-hoped-for donation of the historic African-American Rosewood Cemetery to Galveston Historical Foundation.

The Annual Meeting will be the venue for a number of GHF awards recognizing volunteer service, including the President’s Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service, Outstanding Galveston Historic Homes Tour Volunteer, Outstanding Dickens on the Strand Volunteer, and Spirit of GHF Award.

Drinks and light hors d’oeuvres will be served. The event is free and open to all GHF members. Memberships may be purchased at the door or in advance by calling Julia Muncaster, director of membership, at 409-765-7834.
